The East Room of the White House is the largest room in the executive mansion, and this glass negative records its formal interior during the years when the National Photo Company was documenting Washington landmarks for sale to visitors. The company, active in the early twentieth century, produced large numbers of views of government buildings, monuments and public rooms, and its work offers a useful picture of how the capital presented itself before mid-century. The East Room has long hosted state receptions, weddings and funerals, so its furnishings and proportions were a familiar sight to Americans who never set foot inside. The negative's streaks and blemishes, a result of deterioration in its coatings, are themselves part of its record.
