The East Room is the largest room in the White House, and this glass negative records it as it stood in the years between 1910 and 1925, when the National Photo Company was busy documenting Washington's public buildings and monuments. The room has served as the site of state receptions, weddings, funerals and public ceremonies since the mansion's early decades, so its bare formal layout here carries more weight than a simple interior view might suggest. The collection is a valuable record of how the building looked before later restorations, and the streaks and blemishes on the plate are signs of the glass's age rather than flaws in the scene itself.
