Women holding banners at the White House gates in January 1917 record the start of one of the most visible campaigns of the suffrage movement. Members of the National Woman's Party, later called the Silent Sentinels, stood at the gates with messages urging President Wilson to back a federal voting amendment, and many were arrested later that year. The glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city in the 1910s. The title was supplied from data recorded on the negative and has not been independently verified, so the exact date and scene are worth checking against other sources.
