What appears to be a checkered cab shares the frame with the White House, pairing the newer street life of automobiles with the executive mansion behind it. The National Photo Company made many views of Washington in the early 1920s, when taxis and private cars were becoming a familiar part of the capital's traffic. Herbert A. French gave this glass negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes from deteriorating coatings are visible on the plate, a common condition for glass negatives of this age.
