A painted likeness of Martha Washington, photographed at the White House, is the subject of this glass negative. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington in the early twentieth century, documented government buildings and the city's public life, so the plate also shows how the executive mansion displayed its history to visitors. Painted portraits of Martha Washington, many modeled on Gilbert Stuart's work, were widely copied and hung in official rooms. The glass shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its coating, which give the image a faded, softened quality.
