A painting of the House of Representatives is the subject here, though the title comes from unverified National Photo Company data, so the artist and the painting's exact subject are uncertain. The House has met in its current chamber in the Capitol's south wing since 1857, and the Capitol's interiors were long decorated with paintings and sculpture that marked national history. The National Photo Company made many views of Washington's government buildings and monuments in the early twentieth century. Herbert A. French gave this glass negative to the collection in 1947, and the streaks and blemishes visible on it come from deterioration of the original coating.
