Inside the Capitol's House chamber, this view survives on a 4 by 6 inch glass negative, a format common for detailed architectural work of the period. The House had met in its south wing chamber since 1857, and by the early 1900s the room was the setting for the debates and votes that shaped national policy. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the city's buildings and public life in the years around 1912 to 1930. The title and date come from the company's notes and neighboring negatives, so they are approximate, and streaks and blemishes from the aging of the glass coating are worth noticing.
