Inside the Capitol, the House of Representatives ran its own post office for members and their staff, and this glass negative records that working room on March 20, 1926. The office handled letters and packages moving between lawmakers, their offices and constituents across the country. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the capital and its government buildings in the early twentieth century, and it reached the collection through a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Streaks and blemishes across the plate come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, so the picture shows its age as well as its subject.
