A refrigerated box for parcel post, photographed at the City Post Office in Washington, shows how the mail system adapted to a new kind of shipping. Parcel post began in the United States on January 1, 1913, and refrigerated containers like this one were intended to keep perishable goods, such as meat, fish, and dairy, from spoiling in transit. The National Photo Company, which recorded the capital and sold views of it, made the image on glass. The negative shows streaks and other blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, and its date is estimated from related negatives in the same range.
