This map is the second in a numbered series of city statistical maps, and it turns the familiar Washington street plan into a record of elevation. Its subject is the slope of the streets, which the city's engineers needed to know before they could decide where to grade, pave, and drain. The capital's grid was laid out in 1791 over ground that rises from the Potomac flats toward Capitol Hill, Georgetown's heights, and ravines cut by Rock Creek and Tiber Creek. Maps like this one show how the planners' geometric avenues met that uneven terrain.
