The Clinton Apartment House is known in this record mainly by its name, which the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the title is noted as unverified. The image was made on an 8 by 6 inch glass plate, a format the company's photographers used widely to record Washington buildings and streets in the early 1920s. Glass negatives like this one can show streaks and blemishes where the original coating has deteriorated, so some marks reflect age rather than the scene itself. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947, and it shows how much of the capital's everyday architecture was preserved by commercial studios of the period.
