Few pictures in this gallery name a residence as plainly as this one, which records a building called the Toronto apartments at 20th and P Streets in Northwest Washington. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed the capital's streets and buildings in the early twentieth century, made the negative when apartment houses were spreading through neighborhoods like this one near Dupont Circle. The title comes from information written on the negative sleeve and the date is estimated from neighboring negatives, so the exact year is approximate. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating and are worth noticing when studying the plate.
