Few details survive about this particular building, which the National Photo Company recorded only by its address, 2400 16th Street Northwest. Sixteenth Street was one of Washington's grand residential avenues in the 1910s and 1920s, when apartment houses rose along its blocks for government workers and professionals drawn to the growing capital. The National Photo Company, active in Washington from about 1907 into the early 1930s, produced thousands of street views like this one for postcards and civic records. Because the date is inferred from neighboring negatives, the picture is best read as a snapshot of its era, and the faint streaks on the glass are signs of age.
