The picture shows the Netherlands legation at 2400 16th Street in Washington, one of the foreign missions that settled along the 16th Street corridor north of Dupont Circle in the years before and after World War I. As the diplomatic corps grew and moved away from the older downtown, these residences and offices became part of the city's changing social and official geography. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington streets and buildings in the early twentieth century, made the image on a glass negative, and its surface shows the streaks and blemishes that often mark plates of this age. Viewed today, it offers a record of how the capital's foreign missions were housed in the decade or so after 1910.
