The Unitarian church at 16th Street and Columbia Road in northwest Washington is the subject here, a corner building caught in a plain, documentary view. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm active in the capital in the early twentieth century, made many street scenes and public buildings that were sold as postcards and souvenirs. The image is a glass negative, a format that recorded fine detail, and its date of about 1926 places it in the years when the Columbia Heights area was growing with houses and churches. Look closely at the street and surrounding buildings for a record of how this neighborhood looked at the time.
