Streaks and blemishes across this glass negative of St. Aloysius Church come from the slow breakdown of its original coatings, so the plate shows its age as well as its subject. The National Photo Company, which made the negative, photographed Washington extensively in the early twentieth century, and its views were sold to visitors and residents as postcards and prints. This picture belongs to that effort to record the capital's churches, streets, and buildings during a period of rapid growth. The date is an estimate based on negatives from the same range, not a confirmed record.
