Fifth Baptist Church stood at the corner of Fifth and E streets in Southwest Washington, and this glass negative captures it around 1920, when churches were a familiar part of neighborhood life across the city. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed Washington for postcards and published views, made the image, and its large plates were valued for their sharp detail in buildings and street scenes. Look closely and you will see streaks and small blemishes across the plate, the result of the original coatings deteriorating over the decades since the exposure was made.
