The Army & Navy Club stood at the corner of 17th and I Streets in Washington, D.C., a block from Farragut Square and close to the War and Navy Departments, so its members were often officers stationed in or passing through the capital. This glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed Washington's buildings and streets in the early twentieth century, and its date is an estimate based on negatives from the same period. Visible streaks and blemishes are typical of aging emulsion on glass, and they offer a reminder of how these images were made and kept.
