Taken at the southwest corner of 17th and I streets in downtown Washington, this view records a busy intersection only a few blocks from the White House in the early 1920s. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed the capital's streets and landmarks for sale to visitors and publishers, made the exposure on a glass negative, which came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. The record dates it only to roughly 1921 to 1922, so the scene is best read as a snapshot of the city's streetscape in those years. Viewers may notice streaks and small blemishes, which result from the natural deterioration of the original emulsion coatings on the glass.
