This picture shows the corner of 7th and F Streets Northwest in downtown Washington, a busy commercial intersection in the 1910s. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm active in the city during these years, made many street views like this one, documenting shops, traffic, and daily life for sale to residents and visitors. Its glass plates captured the city's growing business district just before the automobile and motor traffic transformed these streets. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes across the surface, the result of the negative's coating breaking down over time.
