Union Station, the grand railroad terminal that opened in Washington in 1907, is the setting for this view of an American Red Cross canteen. During the First World War, canteens like this one at busy rail hubs offered coffee, sandwiches and other refreshments to soldiers and sailors passing through on their way to and from camps and ports. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital in the early twentieth century, made the negative, which is dated to somewhere between 1910 and 1920. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes on the glass, the result of natural deterioration in its original coatings.
