The ladies' waiting room at Union Station was one of the specialized spaces in the terminal that Daniel Burnham designed, which opened in Washington in 1907. Separate waiting areas for women were common in large railroad stations of the period, giving travelers a quieter place to rest away from the busy main concourse. The National Photo Company, which documented the capital extensively in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative around 1921 or 1922. Streaks and blemishes visible in the plate come from the gradual deterioration of its original coating.
