Union Station's tracks in Washington, D.C., appear here through the eyes of the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital for decades. The station opened in 1907 as a grand Beaux-Arts gateway to the city, and by the time this glass negative was made, between 1910 and 1925, it had become one of the busiest rail hubs on the East Coast. The plate has the streaks and blemishes typical of aging glass, which is part of its character. Its maker's record and the gift from Herbert A. French in 1947 help place it within the Library of Congress's larger holdings of the period.
