Taken at Union Station in Washington in May 1914, this view shows Theodore Roosevelt, who had left the presidency in 1909 but remained one of the country's best-known public figures. The station, completed in 1907 to designs associated with Daniel Burnham, was then the capital's main rail gateway, so it made a fitting setting for a visit by a national figure. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that produced a large body of press and street photographs in the early twentieth century. Its glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from age, a common trait of negatives of this period.
