Union Station, the Beaux-Arts rail terminal in Washington, D.C., is the subject of this glass negative, whose main building opened in 1907 to a design by Daniel Burnham. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital extensively, made the negative sometime between about 1910 and 1925, a period when the city was growing quickly and rail travel was central to its life. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Look for the faint streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
