Union Station in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, and this glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the city in the early twentieth century. The record dates it only to a span between 1921 and 1922, and the title is marked as unverified, so the exact view and vantage point remain uncertain. The station, designed by Daniel Burnham and opened in 1907, was then one of the busiest rail hubs in the country and a symbol of the capital's ambitions. Note the surface streaks and blemishes, which come from deterioration in the original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
