Aerial views of Washington were still rare in the early 1920s, which makes this look down on Union Station unusual for its time. The station opened in 1907, was designed by Daniel Burnham in the Beaux-Arts style, and anchors the rail lines and street grid near the Capitol. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the city in the early twentieth century. It survives as a glass negative, and its surface shows the streaks and blemishes of age.
