Few rooms in Washington convey the bustle of the railroad age like the waiting room of Union Station. Designed by Daniel Burnham and opened in 1907, the station gathered the city's rail traffic under one grand roof, and its marble halls drew travelers, families, and government officials alike. This view comes from a glass negative made by the National Photo Company, which recorded the capital's streets and public buildings in the years around 1920. Look closely and you may notice faint streaks and blemishes, the natural deterioration of the original coatings on the glass.
