Set at the corner of 13th and G Streets in Washington, D.C., this glass negative records an American Red Cross exhibit on January 30, 1916. Congress had chartered the Red Cross in 1905, and by 1916 the organization was expanding its public presence, an effort that would intensify as war engulfed Europe. The National Photo Company, active in the capital from about 1907 into the early 1930s, documented street life and public events, so the scene offers a glimpse of how civic groups addressed passersby. The location comes from data on the negative sleeve and has not been independently verified, and the glass shows streaks from aging coatings.
