American University, pictured here on a glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection, was a young institution in Washington, D.C., when this view was made around 1916 to 1917. The company photographed the city extensively in the early twentieth century, documenting its government buildings, schools, and neighborhoods for publication and sale. The record's title comes from notes written by the company itself and has not been independently verified, so the exact view is best read as a snapshot of the campus in its early years. Surface streaks and blemishes on the glass come from age and deterioration of the original coating.
