American University, located in northwest Washington, D.C., is the subject of this glass negative from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital's buildings, streets and institutions in the early twentieth century. The university was chartered by Congress in 1893 and had moved to its Mass Avenue campus, known as the Spring Valley area, by the time this picture was made. Because the record title comes from data written on the negative itself and is unverified, the exact vantage point is best read as a general view of the campus during the years around 1916 and 1917. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes across the glass, which result from deterioration in the original coatings rather than from the photographer's choices.
