Few buildings in Washington were built to hold an entire hemisphere's diplomacy under one roof, and this view of the interior of the Pan American Union shows the building that did so. The Union, which grew out of an 1890 conference of American nations, moved into its Beaux-Arts headquarters on Constitution Avenue in 1910, funded in part by Andrew Carnegie. The National Photo Company, which photographed the capital's government buildings and streets in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative sometime between 1910 and 1925. Streaks and surface flaws from the aging coating are visible, a common condition of plates of this age.
