Few courtyards in Washington carry as much diplomatic meaning as the patio of the Pan American Union, the building on Constitution Avenue that housed the organization linking the United States with its Latin American neighbors. Andrew Carnegie helped fund the building, which opened in 1910, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company shows the interior in the years between the world wars, when the Union was becoming a visible symbol of inter-American cooperation. The company documented the capital extensively in this period, so the picture also shows how official Washington presented itself. Streaks and clouding on the glass come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
