A marble bust of Antonio José de Sucre, the Venezuelan general who commanded the decisive victory at Ayacucho in 1824, stands among the plantings in this view of the Pan American Union grounds. The Union's headquarters on Constitution Avenue opened in 1910 to serve the association of American republics, and its gardens and monuments were meant to express hemispheric friendship. The National Photo Company made this 8 by 6 inch glass negative around 1920. Streaks and surface loss from the aging of the original coating are visible across the plate.
