A banana tree growing at the Pan American Union building sets this view apart from the many exterior shots of the capital's monuments. The Beaux-Arts headquarters on Constitution Avenue, designed by Albert Kelsey and Paul Cret and completed in 1910, was built for the inter-American association that later became the Organization of American States, and its courtyard garden showcased tropical plants. The picture is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented Washington sites in the early twentieth century, and the plate shows the streaks and clouding typical of aging emulsions.
