The Van Ness house at 17th Street and Constitution Avenue stood in a part of Washington that was changing fast as the federal government expanded its presence along the avenue. This glass negative, made by the National Photo Company sometime between 1900 and 1908, captures the residence in those years before its site was cleared for new government buildings. The dating comes from James Goode's *Capitol Losses*, a study of Washington buildings that have been demolished. Streaks and blemishes from the aging glass coating are visible, so some fine detail of the house may be softened.
