The Van Ness House was a large residence on the corner of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue Northwest in Washington, a site now given over to federal buildings. The glass negative was made by the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded the city's streets and buildings in the early 1900s, and the picture is dated to between 1900 and 1908. Historian James Goode lists the house among Washington's lost buildings, a reminder of how much of the city's 19th-century domestic architecture has disappeared. Streaks and small blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
