The subject here is a house rather than a public building: the Van Ness House at the corner of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue in Northwest Washington. The house belonged to the Van Ness family, whose name is tied to early 19th-century Washington society and property. The National Photo Company made this glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1908, when it was documenting the capital's streets and buildings for sale as postcards and views. Because many of the city's older mansions were torn down as the government expanded along Constitution Avenue, pictures like this one now record a vanished part of the neighborhood. Faint streaks on the glass are a sign of age in the original coating.
