Few houses in early Washington were as well known as the Van Ness mansion at 17th Street and Constitution Avenue, built by the Van Ness family in the city's early decades and remembered for its lavish entertaining. This glass negative, made between 1900 and 1908, was taken when the city's older residences were giving way to federal buildings and commercial development. The record links the picture to Goode's *Capitol Losses*, a study of buildings lost to the changing capital, so it documents a site that no longer stands. Its National Photo Company origin places it among the commercial street and architecture views the firm produced for the city.
