Sixth Street Northwest in Washington is the setting, and the negative sleeve labels the house Howard House, a title the National Photo Company supplied without verification. The picture was made on an 8 by 6 inch glass plate, a format favored for detailed architectural views before flexible film became standard. That company photographed Washington streets and buildings in large numbers in the early twentieth century, and this collection reached the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. Look for streaks and blemishes on the glass, which result from the natural decay of its original coatings.
