Few buildings in the capital greeted more arriving visitors than Union Station, whose broad plaza fronted Daniel Burnham's Beaux-Arts terminal when it opened in 1907. This glass negative, dated somewhere between 1910 and 1926, records that open forecourt during the years when rail travel shaped daily life in the city. It came from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington streets and landmarks for sale to the public. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coatings, which is worth noticing when you study the image.
