Pennsylvania Avenue, the ceremonial route between the Capitol and the White House, carried the procession that followed William Howard Taft's inauguration on March 4, 1909. Taft took the oath at the Capitol that day, and the parade that traditionally followed made its way down the avenue past crowds on the sidewalks. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a news photography service that sold images to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its glass negative shows the formal pageantry of an inauguration taken in an era when press photographers relied on bulky glass plates.
