The house at the corner of 19th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue was the residence of James Madison, the fourth president, after he left office in 1817 and while the White House was being rebuilt following its burning by British troops in 1814. Its nickname, the House of a Thousand Candles, came from the glittering lights of its many windows, and the building later became a drugstore. This glass negative from the National Photo Company, taken between 1918 and 1920, records the corner as it looked in the years when the house had already taken on its later commercial life.
