A storefront bearing the name Semmes Motor Co. on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C., sets this view apart from the many other street scenes in the collection, and its record places it in the city's early automobile trade. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington streets and businesses in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative around 1920, when dealerships and service garages were multiplying along the avenue's commercial stretches. The 8 by 6 inch plate preserves fine detail in signs and building fronts. Streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coating are visible in places and soften some areas of the image.
