Few details survive about the Semmes Motor Company beyond its name, which the National Photo Company recorded on the glass negative, placing the scene in Washington, D.C., around 1916 to 1917. The studio worked in the capital for decades, photographing streets, storefronts and businesses as the city changed, and a motor company from these years reflects the rapid growth of automobile sales and repair in the era. The glass plate shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging emulsion, which adds to its texture as a record of the period.
