This glass negative records 1725 Connecticut Avenue Northwest, one address on a major thoroughfare that ran north from the White House area and grew into a busy mix of shops, offices, and homes in the early twentieth century. It dates from about 1921 to 1922, when streetcars still served the avenue and automobiles were beginning to crowd the curbs. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington's streets and buildings for years, made the plate, and its glass negatives are valued for their detailed record of everyday city life. Visible streaks and blemishes come from the natural deterioration of the original coating.
