The record places this view at 1st Street and Maryland Avenue, a corner near the Capitol where avenues and smaller streets met in a dense mix of offices, boarding houses, and shops. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the early twentieth century, photographed the city's streets and buildings and sold the views to residents and visitors. This 8 by 6 inch glass negative dates from about 1921 to 1922, and its notes point to streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coating, so fine detail may be softened in places.
