Pennsylvania Avenue, shown here illuminated after dark, is the broad route linking the Capitol and the White House, and night views of it show how the city looked to evening visitors in the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed Washington's streets, monuments and government buildings in the 1910s and 1920s, made views like this one for sale to the public. The record dates the negative only to between 1910 and 1920, so the exact night is unknown. The glass may show streaks and blemishes, which come from the coating on the plate deteriorating over time rather than from the scene itself.
