Few streets in the capital carry as much ceremony as Pennsylvania Avenue, the route linking the Capitol and the White House, and this glass negative shows it after dark. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that issued views of Washington as postcards and prints, made pictures like this around 1916 and 1917. Night scenes on glass plates required long exposures, so the street lights and nearby buildings register as soft, uneven glows. Streaks and blemishes on the plate come from age in its original coatings, and they are part of what makes the negative worth a closer look.
