Few buildings on New Hampshire Avenue in the 1920s carried as much diplomatic weight as the Panama Legation, which marked the presence of a young Central American republic in the capital. Panama had gained independence from Colombia in 1903, and its Washington mission was among the many foreign legations that clustered in the Dupont Circle area as the city's embassy neighborhood took shape. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, whose photographers documented Washington streets and buildings in the 1910s and 1920s. The record's address and date are provisional, drawn from the company's own notes and similar negatives. The glass plate also shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating.
